Rotating your tyres can significantly even out wear and extend their lifespan — but how often should you do it? We've got the answer.
Front and rear tyres on the same car wear at different rates and in different patterns. On front-wheel-drive cars — the majority of UK vehicles — the front tyres do the work of driving, steering, and most of the braking. This means they wear significantly faster than the rears, which are just along for the ride.
On rear-wheel-drive cars, the rear tyres take the driving forces and the fronts handle most of the braking. Even on four-wheel-drive cars, the distribution of forces between axles means front and rear tyres wear differently. Without rotation, you'll replace your front tyres two or three times for every one set of rears.
Tyre rotation involves moving tyres from one position on the car to another — typically moving the fronts to the rear and vice versa. The exact rotation pattern depends on whether the tyres are directional (designed to rotate in one direction only), staggered fitment (different front and rear sizes), or non-directional.
For most standard UK cars with identical-size, non-directional tyres, a straight front-to-rear rotation works well. Directional tyres can only be swapped front-to-rear on the same side, not crossed over. Staggered fitments — common on performance cars — often cannot be rotated at all without dismounting and remounting the tyres.
Regular rotation genuinely extends the overall life of a set of tyres by evening out wear across all four. Instead of replacing front tyres while the rears are half-worn, all four tyres reach the end of their life at roughly the same time. This typically means getting 10% to 25% more total mileage from a set of tyres compared to no rotation.
We recommend rotating every 6,000 to 8,000 miles, or at every other service. A mobile tyre fitter can carry out a rotation at your home in around 30 minutes. Combined with regular pressure checks and correct alignment, rotation is one of the most cost-effective tyre maintenance steps you can take.
