Alloy Wheel Care: Keeping Your Rims Looking Great

Brake dust and road grime are brutal on alloy wheels. We share the best cleaning routine and products to keep your wheels looking showroom fresh.

Why Alloy Wheels Need Regular Cleaning

Brake dust is one of the most corrosive substances your wheels encounter. It's a mixture of carbon fibres, metal particles from brake discs and pads, and adhesive resin. Left on the wheel, it bonds to the surface and begins to etch into the lacquer and alloy beneath. Once etched, it's very difficult to remove without professional refinishing.

Road grime, salt (particularly in winter), and standing water all contribute to alloy wheel corrosion. Regular cleaning prevents this buildup and preserves both the appearance and structural integrity of the wheel. A corroded alloy wheel can develop porosity that causes slow tyre pressure loss.

The Right Cleaning Process

Start with a dedicated alloy wheel cleaner — these are formulated to dissolve brake dust without damaging the wheel finish. Apply the cleaner to a cool, dry wheel (never on a hot wheel just off the road) and allow it to dwell for the time specified on the product. Use a soft-bristled wheel brush and a separate smaller brush for the inner barrel and around the spokes.

Rinse thoroughly, then move on to the rest of the car wash. After drying, apply a wheel sealant or wax to protect the clean surface and make future cleaning easier. Good wheel sealants can last several months and significantly reduce brake dust adhesion.

Dealing with Existing Damage

If your alloys are already heavily pitted or corroded, a standard clean won't restore them. Minor kerbing damage — the scuffs and scrapes that happen in car parks and on tight streets — can often be repaired by a mobile alloy wheel repair specialist, who can match the original finish on-site. More severe corrosion may require a full powder coat or diamond cut refinish.

Keeping your wheels clean is significantly cheaper than having them repaired or refinished. A thorough clean every two weeks in winter and monthly in summer is a worthwhile investment in maintaining the value and appearance of your car.
