EVs are heavier and have instant torque — which means they eat through standard tyres much faster. Here's what to look for when buying EV-specific rubber.
Electric vehicles present unique challenges for tyres. They are significantly heavier than equivalent petrol or diesel cars — the battery packs can add 200 to 500kg of extra weight, which increases the load on every tyre. More load means more heat and faster wear.
Electric motors deliver instant, maximum torque from zero rpm. This is one of the things that makes EVs so thrilling to drive — but that instant torque is transmitted directly through the drive tyres every time you accelerate. Even mild acceleration in an EV puts more stress on the drive tyres than equivalent acceleration in a petrol car.
Major tyre manufacturers have developed EV-optimised tyre ranges in response to these challenges. EV tyres feature reinforced internal construction to handle the higher load ratings, stiffer sidewalls to cope with the increased weight, and tread compounds specifically formulated to resist the wear caused by instant torque delivery.
EV tyres also address the noise issue. Without an engine, road noise from the tyres is much more prominent in an electric vehicle. EV-optimised tyres use acoustic foam inside the tyre — a layer bonded to the inner liner — to absorb road noise and significantly reduce cabin noise levels.
Look for tyres carrying the EV, Electric, or e-mark designation from major manufacturers. Michelin's e.Primacy, Bridgestone's Turanza Eco, Continental's EcoContact 6, and Pirelli's Elect range are all designed with EVs in mind. These tyres have lower rolling resistance (which extends range), appropriate load ratings, and the reinforced construction needed for EV use.
Check the load index carefully. If you're replacing tyres on a heavier EV, you may need a higher load index than the standard size suggests. Fitting a standard tyre with an insufficient load index on a heavy EV can cause premature failure.
