We've mapped out the worst pothole hotspots across Cardiff so you know where to be extra cautious — and what to do if you take a hit.
Based on Cardiff Council pothole reports and driver feedback, certain areas of Cardiff consistently feature as hotspots for road surface damage. Newport Road (particularly between the city centre and Roath) has long been cited for poor surface quality. Parts of Splott, Llanrumney, and Ely also feature regularly in pothole reports.
The city centre, with its high traffic volume and frequent utility works, is another area where the road surface suffers. Church Street, St Mary Street, and the lanes around Cardiff Central Station are areas where sudden drops and patched surfaces can catch drivers out.
Maintaining correct tyre pressure is your single best defence against pothole damage. An under-inflated tyre has less structural integrity and is far more vulnerable to impact damage. An over-inflated tyre has less flex to absorb the impact. Correct pressure means the tyre can do its job of cushioning the wheel from road imperfections.
Driving at appropriate speeds for road conditions — particularly in areas you know have poor surfaces — reduces the impact force when you do hit a pothole. Avoiding driving through puddles over potholes (the water masks the depth of the hole) is also good practice. Stay alert, give yourself space, and don't fixate on your mirrors to the point where you're not seeing what's ahead.
Check your tyres immediately after any significant pothole impact. If you can safely pull over, do so and inspect the affected tyre for bulging, cuts, or visible deflation. Even if everything looks fine, monitor tyre pressure over the following 24 to 48 hours — internal damage can cause a slow leak that's not immediately apparent.
Report the pothole to Cardiff Council using their online reporting tool at cardiff.gov.uk/roads. A report with photos and the precise location (including a grid reference or what3words location) is more useful than a general report. Multiple reports about the same pothole increase the likelihood of it being prioritised for repair.
